Well, after years of saying I was going to build a forge and start forging blades, I finally did it about a year ago. I'm making other items as well and have really enjoyed the whole process of forging, heat treating and tempering.
My fellow blacksmith and freind, Frank Price, taught me the basics of how to build and maintain a coal fire ( yes, there is a right way to do it!) I've been reading, watching videos and hammering away for the past year.
Below right is my oyster knife, this design was copied from other blacksmiths who make this same type. I tried one made by Todd Maund and decided quickly that this is the best oyster knife I've ever used! It handily attaches to your belt loop for easy access. The design also protects your hands from sharp oyster shells. Bottom row is a pair of salad tongs made with clam shells and another hand forged knife.
